Interview with Chuchu Majok Wel Alier
1. What inspired you to write Sunset of Her Dreams?
I was haunted by the stories that never made it into history books—the quiet lives of women who carried entire worlds in their hearts. I wanted to give voice to their longing, their strength, their dreams deferred. Writing this novel was my way of honoring them.
2. What does the title mean to you?
A sunset is both an ending and a beginning. It’s the moment when light softens and truth becomes visible. Sunset of Her Dreams is about the beauty and sorrow of dreams that shift, evolve, or fade—but never truly die.
3. How do you approach writing emotionally complex characters?
I listen. I let them speak in fragments, in silence, in contradiction. I don’t force resolution. I allow them to be messy, tender, and real. I believe every character carries a wound—and that wound is sacred.
4. What role does culture play in your poetry?
Culture is the soil my poems grow from. It shapes the rhythm of my sentences, the rituals of my characters, the weight of their choices. I write from a place of reverence—for language, for lineage, for the women who came before me.
5. What do you hope readers carry with them after reading your book?
I hope they carry empathy. I hope they pause before judging. I hope they remember that behind every quiet woman is a storm of dreams, and behind every silence is a story waiting to be heard.
Excerpt from Sunset of Her Dreams:
"The difference between a weed / And a flower is / The perception you take / The weed seems unwanted / Simply because of its perception / Some way it's elegant / A flower contradicts its perception"

Author Quote: "I write to remember. I write to reclaim. I write because silence has never been enough." — Chuchu Majok Wel Alier
